Ruqya: An Islamic Healing Practice Against Black Magic, Jinn, and the Evil Eye
Ruqya is an Islamic form of healing for individuals affected by Black Magic (Sihr), Jinn (devils), and the Evil Eye (Ayn), often providing relief to those suffering prolonged hardships. Ruqya not only offers spiritual protection from shirk (associating partners with Allah) but also strengthens one’s faith and can serve as a means of da’wah (invitation to Islam) for non-Muslims.

Understanding Sihr (Black Magic)
Sihr is a form of harm that affects the entire body, causing illness, discord, and even separation between spouses. Allah, in His wisdom, has provided a cure for every ailment. Abu Hurayra (RA) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Allah did not send a disease without sending its remedy.

Likewise, the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Each disease has its remedy; if the remedy matching the disease is found, the patient will recover by Allah’s grace” (Muslim, reported by Jabir). Sihr, created through satanic incantations, is nullified by the words of Allah.

Allah says: “And We reveal of the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy for believers, though it increases the wrongdoers only in loss.” (Quran, 17:82)

The Benefits of Ruqya

  1. Provides relief for those afflicted by Sihr, Jinn, or Ayn.
  2. Protects the Imaan (faith) and Aqeedah (beliefs) of Muslims.
  3. Serves as da’wah for non-Muslims who seek Ruqya.
  4. Counters the practices of sorcerers.
  5. Prevents exploitation by Aamils who overcharge and keep Ruqya a secret.

Sorcery and Its Reality
Allah states: “Whenever a messenger came to previous generations, they said, ‘A magician or a madman!’” (Quran, 51:52)

Sorcery and possession by Jinn have long been recognized, although some dismiss them as psychological or superstitious. It is surprising that some Imams and scholars deny their effects, even though Allah confirms their reality: “These two did not teach anyone without saying, ‘We are a test, so do not disbelieve.’ Yet people learned from them how to cause separation between a man and his wife. But they could not harm anyone except by Allah’s permission.” (Quran, 2:102)

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself was affected by Sihr until Allah sent angels to reveal the source of the spell. Once the charms were retrieved and the knots untied through the recitation of protective verses, his health was restored. Sorcery is, therefore, a genuine phenomenon.

The Prohibition of Sorcery in Islam
Allah says: “They knew well that whoever practiced magic would have no share in the Hereafter. What a miserable price they paid for their souls, if only they knew!” (Quran, 2:102)

The Prophet (PBUH) said: “He is not of us who practices sorcery, seeks it, or believes in superstitions; and he who consults a clairvoyant and believes in him has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad (PBUH).” (Reported by Al-Bazzar)

Additionally, Abu Hurayra (RA) reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Whoever consults a seer and believes in their predictions has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad (PBUH).” (Reported by Ahmed, Abu Daoud, At-Tirmidhi, Nassaï, Ibn Majah, and Al-Hakim)

Islam condemns all forms of sorcery as it involves shirk, an unforgivable sin if unrepented. Sorcery exists solely to inflict harm, while Ruqya is a means of defending against its destructive effects.
